April 12, 2015 - First trip to get some groceries!
Well I rode over to my local Woolworths to grab a few things that we needed. I have had the crate strapped to the bike for awhile now and have been telling everyone that it is used for small runs to the shops etc. but have never actually done anything. So today I decided to take the bike and test out the milk crate setup. Pumped up the tyres and headed out. There was the option of parking it up top or in the underground carpark. I went under and locked the bike up to the rail where the trolleys are usually stored. Only took one lock with me as everything on the bike is theft proof, nothing can be removed. I had a couple of bungee cords on the bike but was confident that they would be left alone. I also locked my helmet to the bike.
The return journey...
When I got back I was in such a hurry to unload everything, I forgot to take a photo of the bike loaded up! Was quite a heavy load as it included 4 litres of milk. I managed to fit everything in with abit of careful arranging. I've heard that it is better to have the weight spread across the rack on either side and down lower for beter balance, but I have found the riding was fine. I did notice that even though I have the heavy duty kickstand, when I parked the bike at home loaded up it still tried to tip over on its side. This was because I had put all the milk on one side. Next time I'll spread it out evenly. I also found that I had placed the crate too close to the seat. Will have to move it back a little. The bike handled it all well and was strong enough to deal with me as well as the grocery load. There were a few people in the carpark who were surprides to see me walk out with so many bags thinkiing I would be going to my car, the look on their faces was priceless when I walked over to my bike!
So this is what I bought and managed to buy and fit into the milk crate. All up it was about AUD$70 worth of groceries, not much for your money these days eh?
- 6 pack toilet paper
- two loaves of bread
- bananas
- celery
- strawberries
- raspberries
- blueberries
- cherry tomatoes
- cheddar cheese
- lamb mince
- laundry detergent
